Position Description

As the functional owner for Business Development, provide leadership, oversight and management of the business development function and team, supporting transactability and licensure of pipeline products, as well as identification of new assets driving valuation of the company.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  • Source and screen potential licensing opportunities, coordinating due diligence, negotiation, contracting, and decision-making.
  • Support partnering activities, including preparing pitch decks, electronic data rooms, term sheets, and other materials as needed to support negotiations and diligence activities.
  • Manage and serve as primary point of contact for certain industry and academic collaborations, driving successful project and alliance execution.
  • Cultivate close-knit relationships and partnerships with internal colleagues and collaborators to advance BD goals and deliverables.
  • Conduct secondary research (e.g., deal comparables analysis, competitive assessments, etc.) and financial analysis (e.g., product/market forecasts, NPV valuations, etc.) as needed to support R&D and corporate business decisions.
  • In collaboration with other functions, manage fulfillment of contractual obligations, including reporting, payments, and compliance.
  • Build and manage associated systems to organize the business development function and the interconnectivity with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead cross-functional teams and provide strong project management skills to ensure that key risks and opportunities are identified, captured, and presented in an unbiased way to senior management for decision making.
Qualifications/Requirements – We are looking for a candidate with:
  • 15+ years biopharmaceutical experience; candidates with industry, as well as relevant investment banking and consulting backgrounds, will be considered; deal track record strongly preferred
  • Broad understanding in relevant ocular and/or metabolic therapeutic space
  • Demonstrated management of business development mechanics, licensing, contracts
  • BA/BS required; MBA plus graduate degree in scientific / medical discipline (Ph.D. or M.D.) strongly preferred
  • High energy, results-driven individual with a positive “nothing is impossible” attitude.
  • Ability to work in a hands-on collaborative fashion with many different disciplines both inside and outside of the company
  • Strong knowledge of biotechnology industry, drug discovery and development process
  • Ability to work independently in an entrepreneurial, matrixed environment
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to ensure effective decision making and issue resolution competencies
  • Ability to support financial calculations such as NPV and product forecasting
  • Excellent oral and written (Word, PPT) communication/presentation skills for internal and external audiences
  • Able to travel to corporate office locations (Redwood City, CA or Bend, OR) on a frequent basis (monthly)
Preferred Experience, Special Skills and Knowledge – We are looking for a candidate that has:
  • Specialized knowledge or experience in diabetic macular edema or diabetic retinopathy, rare disease and antibodies and small molecules formulations.
